today was a good day

those seem to be getting rarer

but, today was a good day.

I wish I could package today

and wrap it in pretty paper

I’d bring it to the little girl

with wide eyes and frizzy curls

that I used to see in the mirror

I wish I could hop in the car

with today next to me

we’d drive somewhere real

to a bright someplace we’ve never seen

oh, if I could delay today

only for a minute

I’d make it speak to a younger me

even though she wouldn’t believe it

today would tell her

“the caged bird’s singing,

longing for still.

the glass ceiling’s broken,

shattered beyond repair”

today would tell me

“you weren’t the first in the White House,

someone beat you to it.

but now that white house is Black and Indian and Jewish,

it’s amazing. you could do this.”

today was a good day
